Torrential rains, accompanied by hail, have caused significant damage in the agricultural sector and affected the infrastructure in several localities in the last two days. The greatest losses were reported in the Soroca region, where wheat, corn, sunflower crops, and orchards were compromised by the bad weather, reports IPN.
According to the data from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, in the village of Curesnita Noua, hail destroyed 15 hectares of orchards and 6 hectares of vegetable fields. In the locality of Hristici, 32 hectares of orchards and 10 hectares each of corn and sunflower fields were affected. Other crops were compromised in the village of Bulbocii Noi, where hail affected 31 hectares of sunflowers and 38 hectares of wheat, while in the village of Solcani, 16 hectares of wheat were destroyed. The district commission for exceptional situations is due to evaluate the total value of the damages in Soroca.
The unstable weather continued into the evening of July 28, when heavy rains and wind knocked down several trees in the Ungheni, Calarasi, Edinet and Donduseni districts. Rescue and firefighter teams were called in for clearing operations, so that traffic could be resumed on the affected roads.
Also, according to IGSU, electricity providers have reported total and partial disconnections in 21 localities from four districts, including Taraclia, Briceni, Ocnita, Ungheni and in the UTA Gagauzia. The competent authorities emphasize that specialized teams are working to restore the delivery of electricity in the affected areas.
