Gross external debt at US$8.885,50bn in third quarter of 2022

The gross external debt of the Republic of Moldova didn’t change significantly in the third quarter of last year, rising by 1.4% on December 31, 2021. On September 30, 2022, the gross external debt was US$8.885,50 billion, which was 62.1% of the Gross Domestic Product, down 2.0 percentage points compared with December 31, 2021, IPN reports, quoting preliminary data of the National Bank of Moldova.

The long-term debt accounted for the largest part of the gross external debt – 70.6%. It rose by 0.2% on the end of 2021. The short-term external debt grew by 4.3% in the third quarter to 29.4% of the total.

The public external debt represented 31.5% of the external debt and was US$2.798,93 billion, down 0.8% from the start the year. The long-term debt accounted for the largest part of the external public debt, rising by 1.7% in the third quarter.

According to the situation on September 30, 2022, the International Monetary Fund was the main creditor of Moldova with a share of 34.8% of the public debt (US$975.37m). The IMF was followed by the World Bank Group with 31.1% or US$870.09 million.

The private external debt was US$6.086,57 billion, up 0.9% on December 31, 2021.
