Mobile phone users in Moldova will be able to communicate with those in European Union countries at the same price as in Moldova, starting from January 1st, 2026. This will be possible due to the acquisition of the “roaming-like-at-home” regime, applied in the EU. In a response to IPN, the Ministry of Economy and Digitalization stated that this is the first time a country outside the European Economic Area benefits from this mechanism.
The decision will be voted on in July by the EU executive. Two months ago, the Parliament in Chisinau adopted the necessary regulatory framework for regulating roaming tariffs according to European standards. The next step will consist of technical and contractual implementation by mobile phone operators.
Ukraine will also benefit from the European regulation “like at home”. It is also applicable in other non-EU countries in the European Economic Area – Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, as well as in the United Kingdom, where telecommunications operators have decided to align with European legislation.
