The European Union is sending a strong signal of support for the Republic of Moldova with the organization of the first Moldova-EU summit, confirming that the accession process is no longer a distant ideal but a reality in full swing, firmly supported by all 27 member states. Statements to this effect were made by President Maia Sandu at the press conference following the Moldova-EU Summit held in Chisinau, IPN reports.
“Because Moldova matters. And because the entire European Union is working side by side with us to make our country a full member of this family. Today we talked about how and when we will join. We are no longer talking about if. This was possible not because we were lucky. But thanks to the unprecedented political will in Chisinau and Brussels, as well as the daily work of hundreds of people,” said the head of state.
According to the president, Moldova is already integrating into the EU. “The European Union is already happening to us. And the only risk is that we stop. If in the fall we decide that no one can stop us, then everything becomes possible. Moldova has everything it needs to succeed. And it will succeed. Because Moldovans are already European citizens in their minds and hearts,” added Maia Sandu.
The head of state noted that the country’s rapprochement with the European Union has already brought tangible benefits, including real economic results through the opening of the European Union market, but also the maintenance of peace and anchoring in the values of prosperity. According to her, rapprochement with Europe also means direct investment in Moldova’s development, and over the next three years, the European Union will invest €1.9 billion in Moldova – from north to south, in cities and villages.
According to the president, unfortunately, not everyone wants these things for Moldova, and the Kremlin and its strategically scattered voices, including in Chisinau, are trying to convince people that Moldova should not be helped. Even in this context, the head of state argues, Europe has demonstrated that unity and mutual assistance can bring peace, prosperity, and progress—regardless of language, geography, or historical background.
The president also said that during discussions with European officials, they addressed the issue of Ukraine, noting that unity is needed in support of Ukraine. “We support lasting peace in Ukraine—true peace, with clear guarantees that the war will not restart. We will continue to be a reliable security partner – for Ukraine and for the European Union,” Maia Sandu added.
