A drone crashed on the night of Thursday to Friday on the roof of a residential building in the city of Galati, causing a loud explosion and a fire in an apartment located on the 10th floor. Two people were injured and two suffered panic attacks, IPN reports, citing G4media.ro.

According to Romania’s Emergency Situations Department, about 70 people were evacuated and firefighters intervened to put out the fire. The explosion destroyed part of the affected apartment and caused panic in the entire neighborhood.

The Ministry of National Defense in Bucharest announced that the drone would come from the wave of attacks launched by the Russian Federation on targets in Ukraine, near the border with Romania. The aircraft would have entered Romanian airspace before crashing in the southern area of the municipality of Galati. During the air alert, two F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force were lifted into the air, supported by a helicopter.

The area is now secured, and specialists have begun investigations to determine the type of drone and the exact circumstances of the incident. The Galati incident is one of the most serious episodes of this type to have occurred on Romanian territory since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Romanian authorities have repeatedly reported airspace violations near the eastern border, but this is the first case in which such a device has caused casualties.
