Vote informed: The necessary documents for voting

In the parliamentary elections of September 28, citizens of the Republic of Moldova can vote by presenting a valid or legally recognized identity document. To exercise their right to vote, voters must present at the polling station a document that attests their citizenship and domicile or residence.

The most commonly used documents are the identity card or the provisional identity card, which include mentions about citizenship and domicile. Also, voting is allowed based on the passport of a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, even if it has expired, provided it has not been declared invalid according to the law.

Citizens who do not possess valid identification documents can request, even on election day, from the Public Services Agency, the issuance of temporary IDs, so as not to be deprived of the opportunity to vote.

Upon entering the polling station, the voter presents their identification document to the members of the electoral bureau for the registration of their presence at the vote and the verification of their enrollment in the basic electoral list. Subsequently, the voter is handed the ballot, and they sign the electoral list next to their name.

Voters residing within the voting precinct, but not registered on the basic list, can be included on a supplementary list after confirming their domicile or temporary residence. They sign under their own responsibility that they will not vote multiple times and are aware of the legal penalties if they do otherwise.

Students and pupils with the right to vote, who are studying in a locality where they are not registered with a domicile or temporary residence, can vote in any polling station in that locality. They must present their identification document, along with their student or pupil card issued by the educational institution.

Voters who are outside their place of residence or domicile on election day can request a voting rights certificate from the electoral office where they are assigned, in order to vote in any other polling station in the country, being included on the supplementary electoral list. For this, they must present an identity document that attests their residence or domicile within the area of the respective polling station.

After receiving the ballot, the voter goes into the voting booth, applies the “Voted” stamp, and inserts the folded ballot into the ballot box. Taking photographs, displaying the completed ballot, or removing it from the precinct is prohibited.
