The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has been awarded the Reinhard Mohn Prize 2025, which amounts to 100 000 euro. The Head of State was recognized for her courage and determination to uphold democratic values in the face of complex external challenges. According to the presidency, the money will be donated, most of which will go to support development projects in Maia Sandu’s native village – Risipeni, Falesti district, IPN reports.
The Reinhard Mohn Prize is awarded by the Bertelsmann Foundation every two years. Maia Sandu said that it is “a recognition of the courage of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who have once again shown that they want to live in democracy and have fought for itˮ. “Moldova has shown that democracy can endure even in the most difficult circumstances,” the president emphasized.
The Bertelsmann Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Gütersloh, Germany. It conducts research projects, develops innovative solutions and supports democratic reforms. A renowned project of the foundation is the Reinhard Mohn Prize, awarded every two years since 2011 for innovative solutions to contemporary social and political problems.
