The first liver transplant this year was performed on January 19. A 40-year-old man was saved by his younger brother, who became his donor. Today, both of the patients were discharged from the hospital in good condition, “Timofei Moșneaga” Republican Clinical Hospital announced in a press release that is quoted by IPN.
“The 36-year-old patient donated the right lobe of the liver to his brother, who suffered from cirrhosis of the liver. The operation was a planned one. The postoperative period passed without particularities,” said the head of Surgery Department No. 2, Prof. Adrian Hotineanu.
The man said that he fought the disease for 10 years and his state of health worsened the last two years. Liver transplantation was the only salvation.
“I had suffered from depression for ten years. When I found out that my brother was eager to help me, I already thought I was no longer sick. I was very anxious. I thank him very much, for giving me a second chance at life. I also thank all the medical staff for saving me. I feel much better,” related patient Constantin.
His brother, Gheorghe, said that he had no doubts about helping Constantine. “When I saw what the situation was, I suddenly felt that I was going to be the donor. I was lucky. Analyses showed good results. The whole procedure was rather smooth. I feel good. We are both happy to return home,” stated the donor.
According to doctors, a period of postoperative recovery at home will now follow.
