A negative result in the referendum would have created a state of uncertainty and it is good that this scenario was avoided, said the head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova Janis Mazeiks. According to the diplomat, the result of the referendum provides more predictability for the EU-Moldova relations, and the European community will continue to provide all the necessary support in order to bring the country closer to the European Union standards, IPN reports.
The head of the EU Delegation noted that the subject of the opportunity to organize the referendum can be closed after the validation of the plebiscite results by the Constitutional Court. Even if the referendum passed narrowly, it is important that the 50%+1 principle was respected.
“The results of the referendum were confirmed by the Constitutional Court. It is clear that the principle of 50% plus one vote was respected. The referendum is already a fact. We are glad that the provisions related to the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union are stipulated in the Constitution. We will continue to work with the Republic of Moldova and we will help the country become part of the European Union in the future,” Janis Mazeiks stated in the program “Black Box” on TV8.
The European diplomat pointed out that the positive result in the referendum offers certainty regarding the citizens’ will to be part of the European community. The European Union will continue to support the Republic of Moldova in the process of harmonizing the legislation and increasing the living standard.
“I was also asked about the added value of the referendum. It is clear that in order to get closer to the European Union, the Republic of Moldova is on the right track. In case of a negative vote, we would have entered an area of uncertainty. Georgia is an example that I would not compare now with the Republic of Moldova. If there had been a NO in the referendum, there would have been an uncertainty. It is good that we avoided uncertainty. We, together with the Republic of Moldova, will continue to follow this path, insisting on the alignment of the legislation, practices, strengthening of state institutions,” said the European official.
In the October 20 referendum, 50.35% of the electors voted in favor of amending the Constitution so as to enshrine the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it. Also, 49.65% voted against. The balance in favor of the YES option was tipped by over 10,500 votes.
