President Maia Sandu emphasized, at the Conference for the Reconstruction of Ukraine in Rome, that the security of the Republic of Moldova is closely linked to Ukraine’s resistance in the Russian invasion, and for this, a rapid and consistent military support from the international community is vital, reports IPN.
“We understand that our security is common. As we approach the parliamentary elections and face increasingly aggressive Russian interference, we cannot afford for the 1200 kilometers of border with Ukraine to become a hostile frontier”, stated Maia Sandu.
In order for Ukraine to be able to rebuild, it must first resist aggression, asserts Maia Sandu. “None of this will matter if Ukraine cannot defend itself now. Ukraine must resist, and for that, it needs more military support and faster”.
At the same time, the head of state mentioned that Moldova is preparing to contribute tangibly to the reconstruction process, becoming an economic and logistical corridor for southern Ukraine. The country is developing its port on the Danube, modernizing multimodal terminals and transport infrastructure, which connects Moldova with Romania and Ukraine.
Maia Sandu has issued a call to the European Union to support the acceleration of infrastructure projects that connect the Republic of Moldova with Ukraine and Europe. “It is an investment in our common resilience”, concluded the head of state.
The President reaffirmed the unconditional support of the Republic of Moldova for Ukraine and thanked the Ukrainian people for their courage and determination, addressing directly the leader in Kiev, Volodimir Zelenskyy. “Your resistance protects not only Ukraine, but also Moldova. We know how much it is worth”, Maia Sandu emphasized.
The President reminded that Moldova is directly experiencing the consequences of the war and that it has hosted Ukrainian refugees, who now represent approximately 4% of the country’s population.
