The Republic of Moldova won the title of Balkan judo champion in the U18 mixed team event at the Balkan Championship held in Bosnia and Herzegovina, IPN reports.
The national judo team took the first place after defeating Romania, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The mixed team competition, a relatively new format in judo, combines matches between athletes of both sexes, in different weight categories, with an emphasis on cohesion and technical balance in teams.
The success in the team competition was complemented by a remarkable performance at the individual level. The Moldovan judokas won a total of 14 medals, of which 8 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze ones.
According to the organizers of the Balkan Championship, Moldova’s results confirm the high level of youth judo and the potential of athletes to successfully perform at European and world competitions.
The Moldovan team’s participation in the competition was financed by the Ministry of Education and Research. The Balkan Judo Championship is one of the most important competitions in the region.
