Owners of cats, dogs and polecats obliged to have animals vaccinated against rabies

The persons who own cats, dogs and polecats are obliged to have the animals vaccinated against rabies for prophylactic purposes. The Government approved a sanitary-veterinary norm that defines the measures to prevent, combat, control and eliminate rabies in domestic and wild animals, IPN reports.

“Rabies is one of the most neglected diseases in the world. Intersectoral cooperation is essential in the process of addressing this issue. For the purpose, measures to involve the whole society were worked out so that each citizen is responsible for public and animal health,” said Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry.

As many as 1,156 cases of rabies in wild and domestic animals were recorded in Moldova in 2012-2021. In the period, over 90% of the cases of rabies were detected in cattle, dogs, foxes and cats. Twenty species of animals that tested positive for rabies were identified in Moldova so far.
