Romania will provide financial support of 1.7 million euros for the completion of the first comprehensive assessment of the forests in the Republic of Moldova. The project details were discussed by the Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, during a visit to Brasov, reports IPN.
The program will be implemented by mixed teams of experts from Romania, from the “Marin Dracea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry, and from Moldova, within the Institute for Forestry Research and Management and the “Moldsilva” Agency.
The inventory will provide accurate data about the forest area, their condition, and the total volume of timber mass. This information will help authorities to combat illegal logging more effectively, plan reforestation, and manage forests in a responsible and sustainable manner.
In addition to the forest assessment project, the authorities also aim to strengthen collaboration with the academic environment in Romania in the field of environmental protection. During a visit to the Transylvania University in Brasov, the parties agreed that research and innovation topics should also target the Republic of Moldova, with a focus on studying the causes of drying of some forest areas and identifying tree species with increased resistance.
“The partnership with Romania reaffirms the mutual commitment to environmental protection, strengthening institutional capacities, and sustainable development, to the benefit of both countries,” states a press release from the Ministry of Environment.
