All schools in Kiev will be closed from January 19th until February 1st, due to the energy crisis caused by recent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure. The announcement was made by the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Kliciko, who explained that the forced break will require adjustments in the school calendar, reports IPN.
Students will make up for the January holiday during the warm period of the year, the spring break will be shortened, and the summer vacation will start a week later. The school year is expected to end by July 1. “Our priority is the safety of the children and maintaining the educational process even under difficult conditions,” notes the mayor of Kiev.
At the national level, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has allowed communities to independently decide how to organize studies until February. According to local press, in Brovary, physical attendance classes are set to resume from January 19, but with a reduced schedule. In Odessa, schools continue to operate in standard mode, with physical attendance. In Zaporozhye, the educational process takes place in specially arranged underground schools. In the Kharkov region, local authorities are considering the possibility of similar school holidays or a temporary transition to online education, due to power outages.
