Six persons applied to take part in the contest to fill the position of prosecutor general – a jurist, two lawyers and three prosecutors, including the current acting prosecutor general, IPN reports.
The candidates are jurist Andrei Coca, lawyers Ilie Rotaru and Sergei Perju, prosecutor Igor Demciucin, deputy chief prosecutor of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Octavian Iachimovschi, and current acting prosecutor general Ion Munteanu.
Prosecutor General Alexandru Stoianoglo was suspended at the beginning of October 2021 and was discharged from office at the end of September 2023. The post was held on an interim basis by Dumitru Robu and later by Ion Munteanu.
The Superior Council of Prosecutors in October announced a contest to choose the candidate for the position of prosecutor general. The deadline for submissions was November 22, 2023. As only two persons applied – lawyer Ilie Rotaru and prosecutor Igor Demciucin – the Council decided to extend the contest.
According to the Regulations concerning the organization of the contest, the Superior Council of Prosecutors, within 20 working days of the deadline for submitting applications, in a closed meeting examines the files and selects the candidates who meet the conditions for participating in the contest and sets the date of the interview.
