The European Parliament is requesting pre-accession funds for the Republic of Moldova in the multiannual budget and the integration of Moldova into the EU’s security and defense programs. The announcement was made by MEP Dan Barna, Vice President of the Renew Europe Group, in the context of the vote in Strasbourg on the European Commission’s country report on the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
According to Dan Barna, a series of proposals made by the Renew group were included in the final report, reflecting wide support for the European course of the Republic of Moldova.
Thus, the request to member states to supplement the funding for Moldova through the European Peace Facility was also taken into consideration.
At the same time, a request was included for the EU to compensate for the US suspended funding from USAID, particularly those in the energy sector.
“Republic of Moldova makes substantial progress in the process of EU accession, and all pro-European groups in the European legislature support the efforts of the administration in Chisinau,” mentions Dan Barna.
The MEP further mentions that the country report and requests to the European Commission are yet another concrete step of support for Moldova, following the adoption of the 2 billion euro Growth Facility in the spring of this year.
The European Commission is expected to present the first version of the budget this summer.
