The International Monetary Fund has expressed its willingness to support the Republic of Moldova in the future. The statement was made by the head of the IMF mission, Alina Iancu, at the end of consultations held in the Republic of Moldova from December 4 to 17, reports IPN.
“I have discussed with the authorities about the possibility of providing support to the Republic of Moldova and about initiating discussions on a new round of financial assistance”, declared Alina Iancu.
When asked about the tranche of approximately 3 billion lei from the IMF, which was not disbursed, she explained that the non-completion of some key reforms led to the non-granting of the last tranche of financing. According to her, several conditions stipulated by the program were not met.
“We are discussing budget expenditures for the year 2025, but also about some public administration and fiscal reforms, included in the program’s conditionality. The second component is about governance, specifically strengthening public institutions. In this context, we refer to the fight against high-level corruption”, Alina Iancu pointed out.
At the same time, the IMF representatives point out that progress in combating corruption is uneven, and some key institutions, including the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, are facing staff shortages and uncertainties about long-term operation. The IMF has urged the authorities in Chisinau to adopt concrete and sustainable measures to strengthen the rule of law.
