Ex-President Igor Dodon will stay under house arrest. Even if it was announced that a decision will be taken on Thursday, the court on Tuesday rejected the prosecutors’ request to transfer the former President under remand detention. During the hearing, members and sympathizers of the Party of Socialists gathered together in front of the Appeals Court, chanting “Don’t touch the opposition!”, “No to political revenge!”, “No to political prisoners!”, IPN reports.
After the hearing, Igor Dodon told the journalists that he is innocent. “I’m ready to cooperate with the investigation bodies. I have never hidden. But I think this is a political case started by order of the senior administration, in particular Misses Maia Sandu, who was my challenger in two presidential elections,” stated Igor Dodon.
He noted he does not trust the prosecutors handling his case as a number of relevant proofs appeared in the media. He asked to replace the prosecutors as these do not have the necessary experience and are politically biased. He also said that his case is turned into ‘televised justice’ so as to distract society’s attention from the dramatic social and economic situation in the country.
Anticorruption prosecutors said Igor Dodon should be remanded in custody as home arrest cannot prevent the accused from getting in touch with persons involved in this case.
Igor Dodon was detained a week ago following searches carried out at his home. He was later placed under house arrest, being charged with passive corruption, acceptance of financing for the political party from a criminal organization, treason and unjust enrichment.
