Some 35% of the streets in Taraclia village of Căușeni district were lit in the framework of a project that was financially supported by USAID under a partnership established with Comunitatea Mea program. The project has a total value of US$57,500 and over US$39,100 of this sum was invested by USAID, while US$18,400 is the contribution of the local public administration. Earlier, the villagers had only one lit street in the locality, IPN reports, quoting a press release
The implementation of the project contributed to strengthening the LPA’s capacities to attract investments . The mayor’s office managed to obtain additional financing, which enabled it to extend the street lighting system to cover nearly the whole village. This way, Taraclia, even if it is a small community, can serve as an example of efficient implementation of projects in the field of public lighting.
The project ensured efficient street lighting on 12.3 km of local roads for almost 4,000 inhabitants.
Mission Director for USAID Moldova Jeff Bryan said that USAID is committed to support the local public authorities in their efforts to respond to the needs of citizens with transparency and responsibility. This effort shows that democracy produces results and offers more opportunities to communities. The street lighting project is an example of these efforts in action.
Comunitatea Mea program director Daniel Șerban, said the spirit of the community is the most important thing. “Together with you, we managed to show to everyone that life in Moldova is possible, that the people should come home from abroad not only on holidays,” he stated.
Uliana Bocancea, an inhabitant of Taraclia, said the people in villages want electricity, good roads, water and heat. When there is electricity all the other things are done easier. Their group of active citizens will work further to contribute to the development of their community.
Comunitatea Mea is an eight-year, USAID-funded program that is strengthening local government in Moldova to become more effective, transparent, and accountable to citizens. It is implemented in Moldova by the global development and education organization IREX.
