Death rate in 2020 up almost 12%

As many as 40,656 deaths were recorded in Moldova last year. The figure is by 11.7% or 4,245 cases higher than in 2019. Over half of the deaths – 56.3% – were caused by circularity system diseases, IPN reports.

The National Bureau of Statistics, which makes reference to data of the Public Services Agency, said the general death rate was 15.4%, an increase of 1.8 percentage points on 2019. The analysis by sexes showed the death rate among men was 17.1%, while among women was 14%.

According to interim data of the National Public Health Agency, 56.3% of the deaths were caused by circulatory system diseases, 14.6% – by malignant tumors, 7.7% – by digestive disorders, 4.8% – by accidents, poisonings and traumas, 4% – by respiratory diseases, while 12.6% were due to other reasons.

The National Bureau of Statistics noted the structure of mortally by the main classes of death causes is different for men and women. Mortality from circulatory system diseases for women is by 12.4 percentage points higher than for men. In the case of mortality from circulatory system diseases, the so-called female super-mortality is witnessed.

60.3% of the deaths caused by circulatory system diseases were recorded in northern Moldova. The highest number of deaths due to malignant tumors was registered in UTA Gagauzia (17.3%) and the municipality of Chisinau (16.4%). The deaths caused by digestive disorders represented about 10% in central districts and 9% in southern districts.

The Public Services Agency said the number of death certificates registered by the civil status bodies in the first three months of 2021 was higher than in the corresponding period last year.
