Former mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoacă decided to give up the posts of municipal councilor and of president of the Liberal Party, interrupting this way his political and public activity. He said the gesture is also in protest at the situation in which he found himself following the starting of criminal case against him and because these weren’t classed as political. According to him, the “executioners”, instead of being held accountable, are promoted to higher posts, IPN reports.
In a public letter to the partners from Europe and the U.S., Dorin Chirtoacă says that since 2001 he had taken part in civic and political activity, pleading for the reunion with Romania and for integration into the EU. But in May 2017, he was arrested and suspended illegally, as he considers, from the post of mayor of Chisinau by “the Plahotniuc-Dodon-Șor mafia regime”. “I didn’t bother you after the power was changed in the summer of 2019, hoping that the gradual return to democracy of the Republic of Moldova will determine a return to legality in my case too. Regrettably, after another two years, the injustice continues and worsens,” noted Dorin Chirtoacă.
He said the cases featuring him are ongoing. His apartment, the house of his grandparents and even the apartment of his mother who died this year continue to be sequestrated. “A fair trial, reasonable timeframe and effective remedy are absent. Evidently, this can discourage anyone from further becoming involved and doing something for the Republic of Moldova and for democracy. However, I tried to find energy to go on. Three weeks ago, I remained consternated to see how the prosecutors of the regime of Plahotniuc – D. Robu, V. Furtuna, V. Morari – are promoted. They are those who fabricated my cases by order of Plahotniuc and Dodon,” stated the former mayor.
According to him, with such personages the fight against corruption will not only be mimicked, but will also be thwarted, compromised and replaced with arrangements by dishonest and primitive methods. “It became evident that any solution provided in the Republic of Moldova since the dropping of accusations until acquittal or conviction will be political and not an act of justice. In such conditions, I’m in an absurd situation of blockage and see no possibility of defending my cause and honor, if only at the ECHR, where application No. 24516/18 Chirtoaca v. the Republic of Moldova, concerning my illegal suspension from post and the violations committed so far, was registered,” said Dorin Chirtoacă.
