European Commissioner for Justice in Chisinau: EU attentively follows reforms

The justice sector reform was and remains a priority for the authorities of the Republic of Moldova and represents an essential condition for building a democratic society, Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru stated in a news conference given together with the European Commission for Justice Didier Reynders in Chiisnau. According to the minister, the building of confidence and ensuring of transparency in the justice system are very important on the road to the EU, IPN reports.

Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that the integrity of the players of the justice sector is a key concern and results can be achieved only by taking complex measures. “The courts should faster and better examine the criminal cases so that we swifter reach an end result, while the offenders are punished. We will continue the difficult process of monitoring and digitizing processes in the justice sector so as to ensure a fair and independent justice system, as the strategy for this sector provides,” stated the minister of justice.

She underlined the necessity of pursuing policies in the field of money laundering, of strengthening the administrative capacities in the system and of developing information systems, including in the justice sector.

The minister noted that now more than ever, the quality of justice is an element assumed by the Republic of Moldova in the European integration process. “We will show great diligence so as to meet the expectations and to deliver results because the way in which justice is done directly influences the functioning of society, economic development and the security of justice,” said Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.

For his part, Commissioner Didier Reynders said that the EU attentively follows how reforms are done in the Moldovan justice sector. “We will follow the implementation of pre-vetting and deoligarchization, the recommendations formulated by the Venice Commission before the reform was adopted by Parliament. The quality, not the speed is important. It will be a very hard year and I’m eager to see what the result of reforms is. The Commission will support this process. I welcome the implementation by the Republic of Moldova of the recommendations submitted by the Venice Commission and encourage Moldova to implement all the Commission’s recommendations,” stated the European official.

Didier Reynders assured that Moldova’s future is in the EU, but this implies a lot of work. “We have had good cooperation and I noted that at a particular moment we will all form part of the European family,” said the European Commissioner.

Referring to the war in Ukraine, Didier Reynders encouraged the Republic of Moldova to join the new dialogue group launched by Ukraine, the Netherlands and the International Criminal Court with the objective of collecting evidence about the war crimes committed in Ukraine so that the aggressor state answers for them.
