The President of Romania Klaus Iohannis pleads for the attenuation of the negative impact of Russia’s actions on the Republic of Moldova and Georgia – “the partner states that already feel Moscow’s pressure”. In an extraordinary meeting of the European Council, the President of Romania underlined the importance of offering the necessary financial support for strengthening the partners, IPN reports.
“We are facing the most serious challenge in the recent history of Europe and the close coordination of reactions and approaches with the Euro-Atlantic allies, primarily the U.S. and NATO, must be further continued,” says a press release of the Presidential Administration of Romania.
The European leaders who took part in the conference condemned the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, underlining that the illegal military actions of Russia represent flagrant violation of international law and principles of the UN Charter and undermine stability and security at European and global levels.
There was agreed a package of additional restrictive measures that will impose massive and severe costs on Russia for its actions against Ukraine. The sanctions will embrace financial, energy and transport sectors, dual-use goods and control and financing of exports, the visa policy. The Council of the European Union is to adopt, without delay, the proposals formulated by the European Commission and the High Representative of the EU. The European leaders asked to urgently design and adopt an additional package of individual and economic sanctions that will cover also Belarus.
The European leaders also agreed that the European Union will continue to closely cooperate with its neighbors and reiterated the unconditional support and the commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and Georgia. The EU will continue the close coordination with its partners and allies of the UN, OSCE, NATO and G7.
