President Maia Sandu welcomed the start of formal talks to join the EU, stressing that the country’s future is within the European family, IPN reports.
The official expressed her gratitude for the unwavering support on the part of the European leaders. “We are stronger together,” Sandu said on X.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyn congratulated Moldova and Ukraine on opening accession negotiations. “This is very good news for the people of Ukraine, Moldova, and the entire European Union. The path ahead will be challenging but full of opportunities. Wishing you a successful start of the negotiations,” the official noted.
“This is an important moment that strengthens us, that binds us together as one family. Our shared future starts now,” said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
The First Intergovernmental Conference to start the negotiations between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova begins at 18.00 Luxembourg time (19.00 Moldova time). It will be opened by Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Foreign Trade and the Federal Cultural Institutions of Belgium Hadja Lahbib, who will also present the negotiating framework together with European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi. Then Prime Minister Dorin Recean will present the position of the Republic of Moldova in the upcoming negotiations.
