Manufacturers and importers will be directly responsible for the collection and recycling of the waste they generate. The purposes of the measure, according to a decision approved by the Government, are the development of an efficient waste management system, the reduction of pollution and pressure on the environment, reports IPN.
The financial and organizational responsibility for collection and treatment will shift from public authorities to manufacturers. The new rules target packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, tires and used oils.
“The objective of these regulations is to have cleaner villages, localities, cities, and fields”, declared Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the implementation of the new rules will contribute to reducing the volume of waste deposited, increasing the recycling rate, and developing the collection and treatment infrastructure, based on the “polluter pays” principle.
The authors of the project believe that the implementation of the new measures will align Moldova with European standards regarding the circular economy and will allow for the efficient use of resources. Moreover, the population will benefit from improved sanitation services and a cleaner environment.
