Chisinau has initiated the process of denouncing the basic agreements of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The statement belongs to the head of Moldovan diplomacy, Mihai Popsoi, who explained that the authorities are currently in the process of approving the denunciation of the three fundamental agreements that underpin the quality of CSI membership, reports IPN.
“We are in the process of approving the denunciation of the agreements that underpin our presence in the CIS. The CIS status, signed in Minsk on January 22, 1993, the founding agreement of the CIS from December 8, 1991, and the annex from December 22, 1991. This means that Moldova, officially, will no longer be a CIS member. The denunciation of these three basic agreements that underpin our presence in the CIS, will give us the right to say that legally it will no longer be part of the CIS”, declared Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi during the “La 360 de grade” show on Radio Moldova.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs further mentioned that the denunciation documents are to be finalized at the government level by mid-February, and will subsequently be submitted to Parliament for adoption.
“At the beginning of the new Parliament session, the documents denouncing these agreements will come to the legislators’ table for decision. By mid-February, we will finalize the processes in the Government, subsequently this decision is to be taken by our fellow deputies”, explained Mihai Popsoi.
At the same time, the minister emphasized that exiting the CIS does not automatically imply the denunciation of all existing agreements, especially economic ones, if they are beneficial for the Republic of Moldova and do not contradict the country’s European path.
“Part of the economic agreements with the CIS, as long as they do not contradict our being in the European Union and if they bring benefits, there is no reason to denounce them. But from a legal point of view, we will no longer be part of the CIS”, said the head of diplomacy in Chisinau.
