The President of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, is set to submit his resignation to the Constitutional Court in Sofia on Tuesday. If the request is approved, his duties will be assumed by Vice President Iliana Iotova, who will ensure the interim until the presidential elections, scheduled for November, reports IPN.
The announcement was made Monday evening by the Bulgarian leader, during a televised speech. Rumen Radev is in his second consecutive term as head of state, having been elected for the first time in 2016 and re-elected in 2021.
According to the international press, the role of president is largely honorary, however, over time, Rumen Radev’s political ambitions have intensified. Recently, he has evoked the possibility of forming his own party, “so that Bulgaria can regain its stability and fight against corruption”. “The current political class has betrayed the hopes of Bulgarians,” he stated in a speech and added that his country needs “a new political contract”.
The announced resignation of Rumen Radev comes just a few days after the decision to organize early parliamentary elections, taken in the context of the main parties’ refusal to form a government, a month after the resignation of Prime Minister Rosen Jeliazkov, against the backdrop of protests.
The anticipated legislative scrutiny will be the eighth organized in the last four years. Until then, a technical government is to be appointed, which will set the election date, anticipated for the end of March or the beginning of April.
