Approximately 50,000 people consume drugs in the Republic of Moldova, of which 21,000 use injectable substances. The statement was made by the Minister of Health, Emil Ceban, on a televised program. According to him, only 12,000 of the consumers are undergoing treatment, the rest refusing to be treated, reports IPN.
“Every year we have 450-500 new people. Out of which 40-50 are children aged between 16 and 18 years, thus under the age of maturity”, the minister mentioned.
Emil Ceban stated that, according to statistics, an average of 37 deaths are recorded annually, most of them among men.
The person responsible for the fight against drugs within the Ministry of Health has been dismissed, after the minister was alerted that his team is not collaborating adequately with other institutions. The minister pointed out that there are problems in inter-institutional collaboration and that he is personally involved in rectifying the situation.
