The goal of the Moldovan government for the end of this year is to obtain the invitation to start accession negotiations with the European Union, reiterated Nicu Popescu, Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, after the annual convention of Moldovan ambassadors.
During a press briefing, the official stressed that the MFAIE is in charge of the European integration process. “But absolutely every ministry, every agency in Moldova needs more capacities for transposing the EU acquis. And in a practical way, the biggest necessity at this stage is for all government institutions to have competent people who are committed to the European integration process”, declared Nicu Popescu.
The convention was an occasion to discuss the importance of the diplomatic service’s contribution to the economic growth of Moldova, by attracting investments, mobilizing assistance and promoting exports, both in the EU and on new markets. A special topic concerned the diaspora, in particular the expansion of Moldova’s consular presence and better consular services in general.
“We took stock of a number of achievements and obviously we also discussed our plans and goals for next year and the years to come. President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Speaker Igor Grosu, honored us with their presence. They outlined tasks for us, offered comments and suggestions for improving our diplomatic work”, stated Nicu Popescu.
When asked about the position of chief negotiator, Popescu said that he or she will be appointed when Moldova starts the accession negotiations. “The chief negotiator is a position that becomes relevant at the moment of the start of negotiations or in the last hundred meters for the preparation of these negotiations. At this point we are all focused on securing the recommendation to start negotiations”.
