More than 2.4 million Moldovans travelled in the European space during nine years since a liberalized visa regime with the EU was introduced. “The liberalization of the visa regime with the EU was one of the important steps taken on the path of European integration,” Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu stated on the occasion of the event.
According to the official, the liberalized visa regime offered new opportunities for the exchange of experience, knowledge and personal development and strengthened the interhuman, cultural and social ties between the Republic of Moldova and the EU. The liberalized visa regime enabled over 2.4 million people to meet their friends and families or to see tourist attractions in the countries they visited.
“We remain firmly committed to the reformation and modernization of the Republic of Moldova so as to ensure sustainable development and our country becomes a full-fledged member of the EU during the shortest period of time,” stated Nicu Popescu.
In 2022, after a decrease witnessed in 2020 and 2021, the EU travel indicators returned to the figures before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, more than 2.36 million trips were made in the EU.
The liberalized visa regime with the EU was introduced on April 28, 2014, with the obligation to possess shot-stay visas for Moldovans with diplomatic passports, who travel in the Schengen Area, being abolished. It became possible following the implementation of the Visa Liberalization Action Plan offered to Moldova on January 24, 2011 under the Moldova – EU Visa Liberalization Dialogue that was launched on June 15, 2010.
