There is no danger to Moldova’s stability, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian said after the de facto Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselsky requested the unconstitutional forces in the region to strengthen their capacities to prevent possible terrorist attacks. The official noted that the rhetoric of the Transnistrian administration is meant to distract the population’s attention from the economic problems faced by the region, IPN notes.
On January 22, Transnistria leader Vadim Krasnoselsky called on the unconstitutional forces in the region to step up the efforts to monitor and counter possible terrorist attacks. He also called upon the “armed and security forces” of the region to ensure the strengthening of “borders:”. Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian said that the rhetoric is false and is meant to present non-existent dangers to the public opinion on the left aside of the Nistru.
“It’s a state of nervousness, which is artificially maintained. It’s about maintaining the feeling of a fortress under siege. In order to maintain control over society and the region, an external enemy is needed, based on the idea of a permanent external danger. Through all the news articles in the press on the left bank of the Nistru about an imminent attack either from Chisinau or from Kiev, society is made to believe that the region is under threat, that the times are difficult and cohesion is needed in society. In this way, society’s attention is distracted from the economic and social problems confronting the region. Over the past two years, such kinds of alerts, bomb alerts, dangers of attack have been quite frequent. More recently, comments about groups of terrorists trained in the Republic of Moldova, who could go and destabilize the Transnistrian region, have appeared in the local press. All these ideas are a follow-up to the first thesis. For now, we do not see any danger to the stability of the Republic of Moldova, but we must be prepared for any situations,” Oleg Serebrian stated in the program “At 360 Degrees” on Radio Moldova station.
The official said that, in the current situation, the region on the left side of the Nistru does not pose an eminent military danger. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the Transnistrian region has been isolated and the arrival of Russian soldiers in the separatist zone is impossible.
“At technical level, big changes cannot take place because the region is isolated. The recruits are on the spot. These Russian units are supplied with human resources from the region. These are young people who have a Russian passport, but probably also the passport of the Republic of Moldova. They are locals. Many of them are young people from Romanian localities situated on the left side of the Nistru. In the current situation, we hope that the region does not pose an increased military danger, but this does not mean that it does not pose a military danger in general,” the Deputy Premier for Reintegration explained.
The dissensions between Chisinau and Tiraspol intensified after the new provisions of the Customs Code entered into force on January 1, 2024. According to the document, the economic agents from the left side of the Nistru are obliged to pay customs duties to the state budget, as the economic agents from the right bank of the Nistru do.
