Romania will continue to work with Ukraine and Moldova to enhance energy interconnection, minister

Romania will continue to work with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to improve interconnection in the energy sector, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Luminita Odobescu stated before the meeting of foreign ministers of the European Union held in Brussels, IPN reports.

“Supporting Ukraine’s energy sector, which is constantly under massive attack from Russia, is another priority. That’s why it is very important to continue to help Ukraine protect its energy infrastructure, replace the damaged equipment and supply electricity. Romania will continue to work with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to improve and extend interconnection in the energy sector,” said Luminita Odobescu, quoted by caleaeuropeana.ro.

The Romanian minister noted that she will inform her counterparts about the signing, by President Klaus Iohannis and President Volodymyr Zelensky, of the agreement on security cooperation between Romania and Ukraine, which was occasioned by the NATO Summit in Washington.

Referring to the sanctions against Russia, the Romanian official highlighted the need to maintain pressure on Moscow through these punitive measures. “The EU must respond to the hybrid threats against the member states, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova. This is why we support the adoption of a new sanctions regime against Russia, which destabilizes the activity abroad,” stated Luminita Odobescu.

As for the discussion with the President of the European Investment Bank and a greater financial involvement of this institution in supporting the EU’s foreign policy objectives, the foreign minister said that it is “very important for the European Investment Bank to support reforms, increase and strengthen administrative capacity, protection of critical infrastructure in candidate countries, such as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova or the Western Balkan countries, but also the connectivity projects in the Black Sea Region”.

Luminita Odobescu is taking part in the meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU member states – the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC). European officials address issues related to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, as well as digital diplomacy. An exchange of views is to be held with EIB President Nadia Calviño during an informal working lunch.
