A Romanian citizen was indicted after he was extradited from the Netherlands for trafficking a young woman from Nisporeni to Greece ten years ago. If he is found guilty, he will serve seven to 15 years in prison, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said that it happened in 2012-2013, and PCCOCS prosecutors took over the investigations in 2017, when they obtained remand detention in absentia, which was to be applied once the man was detained. Following the extradition from the Netherlands, at the request of prosecutors, the man will remain in custody until the Buiucani Court of Chisinau passes its sentence.
When he arrived in Moldova, the defendant was 23 years old. Together with his accomplices, he identified and recruited an 18-year-old girl, whom he persuaded to come with him to Greece to work as a waitress with an attractive salary. On the arrival in Athens, the defendant brought the victim a Greek phone card to let her inform her husband that she “arrived safely”. A day later, she learned that she was going to provide sexual services. The young woman had her papers confiscated and started to be pressed to have sex for money.
Four days after arriving in Greece, she tried to flee but was caught and physically assaulted. The victim threatened to commit suicide and cut her hand veins in the presence of the traffickers. The young woman was put on a bus bound for Iasi, from where she was transported to Nisporeni. She later filed a complaint with the authorities against the man.
The defendant faces 7 to 15 years behind bars. At the request of PCCOCS prosecutors, two other Romanian citizens, besides the one who was extradited, are wanted in the same case.
