The Romanian justice system has rejected Ion Ceban’s request to suspend the Schengen ban

The judges in Bucharest have rejected the request of the mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, to suspend the execution of the order prohibiting his entry into the Schengen area, reports IPN.

“The request made in opposition to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the General Inspectorate for Immigration is rejected, as it was introduced against persons without passive procedural status”, the magistrates’ decision states.

The decision was announced today. The verdict is not final and can be appealed within five days of notification.

In early July, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Ion Ceban, the leader of the National Alternative Movement Party, is banned from entering Romanian territory and the Schengen area, along with two other Moldovan citizens. The measure was imposed “for reasons related to national security considerations”.

Ion Ceban has not yet responded to today’s decision, but he previously complained about an alleged political agreement between the authorities in Chisinau and those in Romania. “It is directed against me personally. They believe that I pose a threat to the elections on September 28”, said the mayor.
