On August 31, Ukraine will celebrate, for the first time, the Day of the Romanian Language. The intention of the Ukrainian authorities was announced in the context of the high-level visit made to Kiev by the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana-Silvia Toiu, reports IPN.
“I have greeted the intention of the Ukrainian authorities to declare August 31 as the day of the Romanian language in Ukraine,” mentioned Minister Oana Toiu in a message published on her social networks.
According to her, the visit included meetings with the President of the Supreme Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha.
In discussions with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Oana Toiu emphasized the need for increased attention to the needs of ethnic Romanians in Ukraine and proposed a strengthened dialogue between Romanian parliamentarians and those from the Supreme Rada, including in the process of drafting laws targeting these communities.
At the meeting with the Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, the parties agreed to continue joint government sessions, aimed at resolving bilateral issues and advancing cross-border infrastructure projects. “Cross-border infrastructure will be crucial for Romanian companies wishing to get involved in the reconstruction of Ukraine, with major economic benefits for the Romanian side,” specified Oana Toiu.
The Minister also discussed with her Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, about cooperation in the field of defense, Romania’s support for exports and energy supply to Ukraine, as well as assistance provided to refugees. “We do all these things not only because they are right and fair, but also because they are in Romania’s national interest: a revanchist Russia at Romania’s borders would be a huge danger to all Romanian citizens, whether they live in Romania, the Republic of Moldova or Ukraine,” emphasized the head of Romanian diplomacy.
Today, Oana Toiu continues her journey to Chernivtsi, where she is participating in a trilateral meeting between Romania, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine, as well as a meeting with members of the Romanian community in the area.
Oana Toiu’s visit is the first bilateral visit of a Romanian foreign minister to Kiev since the unjustified invasion of Russia in 2022.
