The World Health Organization and the European Union donated an eight-tonne batch of humanitarian aid consisting of health products, medicines and rapid antigen tests in response to the refugee crisis. According to the WHO Country Office in Moldova, the donation was estimated at US$804,500, IPN reports.
According to Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco, the resources are limited, but the citizens should not feel the burden of the humanitarian crisis. That’s why she asked the foreign partners and the international institutions, including the WHO, to offer support. The capacities of the national system should be strengthened so as to provide medical assistance to the Ukrainian refugees and to the Moldovan citizens in full amount.
WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Kluge, during his visit to Chisinau on March 22-23, said that the World Health Organization mobilized US$2 million to buy essential medicines and health products.
The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova Jānis Mažeiks noted that Team Europe, with the support of the EU and its member states, has offered continuous support to the health system of the Republic of Moldova. The delivery of medicines and medical devices is aimed at ensuring the proper functioning of the health system in the context of the tragic humanitarian consequences of the war in Ukraine. This is a concrete example of European solidarity in action to support the citizens of Moldova and the people who flee from the war in Ukraine.
