On Monday, Ion Druță will be buried beside the Candle of Gratitude Monument in Soroca, as requested by the writer himself in his will. By presidential decree, Octobern 2 was declared a day of national mourning.
Observatorul.md reported that on Monday at 10:00 AM, a farewell ceremony will be held at the Mihai Eminescu Theater in Chisinau, before writer’s body will be taken to Soroca to be buried.
On Monday at noon, a moment of silence will be kept in Druță’s memory. Across the country and in Moldova’s diplomatic missions abroad, the national flag will be flown at half-mast. Public authorities, businesses and organizations are asked to refrain from mass entertainment activities, and media organizations to bear the national mourning in mind in programming and editing their content.
Ion Druță, 95, passed away on September 28 in Moscow. Born on 3 September 1928 in Horodiște village, formerly Soroca county, Druță was perhaps Moldova’s most outstanding modern dramatist and novelist, as described by Britannica. He was an honorary member of the Romanian Academy, and member of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences.
