Currently, there are no indications of potential destabilization of the internal situation by organized criminal groups, Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu stated to Radio Moldova. However, he does not rule out the possibility of an intensification of such actions as the parliamentary elections approach next year, IPN reports.
Ion Munteanu noted that these actions could take various forms, with the intention and goal being to disrupt the proper electoral process scheduled for next year. “This is our common mission and purpose – to ensure every citizen of the Republic of Moldova has the right to a freely expressed vote and a fair electoral process”, said Munteanu.
According to the prosecutor, the methods used by organized criminal groups to manipulate elections, including electoral bribery, are constantly evolving. Authorities are making every effort to monitor these activities and take the necessary measures to combat them.
“We are identifying situations where virtual money is being used. We are in discussions with the legislative and executive branches to adapt legislation and establish clarity on how such cryptocurrency transactions should be regulated”, the Prosecutor General explained.
To date, fines exceeding 10 million lei have been imposed for cases of passive electoral bribery. Those sanctioned have received fines ranging from 25,000 to 37,500 lei.
