New investment in modernizing universities through extended IBRD funding

Moldovan universities will receive additional funding worth 37.8 million euros for development projects over the next four years. The government has approved the draft loan agreement for the Supplementary Financing of the Higher Education Project, concluded with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), IPN reports.

The Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun, said that today’s decision is related to the extension of the current project implemented with the World Bank and the mobilization of another 38 million euro for the modernization of institutions. 15 million of these resources will go to seven university dormitories, in order to create good living conditions for Moldovan students and to attract international students.

The agreement provides a loan of €30 million and a grant of €7.8 million for the further modernization of higher education, by strengthening research capacity, quality assurance of higher education training.

Investments are also envisaged to promote the internationalization of higher education, to invest in the infrastructure of universities, in particular student hostels, as well as to improve the labour market orientation of education institutions and to respond to the needs of refugees.

At least seven student dormitories will be renovated, research centers and friendly learning environments will be modernized. At the same time, 10 research and innovation organizations within higher education institutions will be equipped. Grants will be offered to young researchers to disseminate research results, and the Innovation Center in Agriculture is to be set up at UTM.
