The national autumn afforestation campaign was launched by the Ministry of Environment and “Moldsilva” Agency. The authorities intend to plant 26 million saplings on 4,000 hectares. The first event of the kind will be staged on November 16 in Mălăiești village of Orhei district, IPN reports.
According to the organizers, the afforestation campaign is an important step towards a greener and healthier future for Moldova. By involving the authorities, the private sector, NGOs and citizens, a sustainable environment can be built for future generations.
“Over 24,000 hectares of land have been made available for afforestation. A historic €200 million financing agreement with the European Investment Bank was signed in September. This funding will support the planting of 63,000 hectares of forests over the next four years, the construction of 30 timber warehouses, a seeds examination center and three modern nurseries, as well as the building of more than 265 kilometers of forest road. The project will create new jobs in rural areas,” said Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu.
The director of “Moldsilva” Agency Victor Durbală urged the citizens to join in. “Each tree planted will be a symbol of our responsibility towards nature and the future of Moldova. This autumn we aim to have new forests on an area of over 3,400 hectares,” said Victor Durbală.
In the north of the country, trees will be planted on the land of the mayor’s offices of Briceni, Ocnița, Edineț, Sîngerei, Glodeni, Fălești, Drochia, Soroca, Florești, Șoldănești, and Rezina districts. In the central part of Moldova, in the districts of Călărași, Orhei, Ungheni, Nisporeni, Strășeni, Hîncești, Criuleni, Anenii Noi and Ialoveni, trees will be planted on an area of over 1,150 hectares. In the south, over 1,200 hectares will be afforested in the districts of Leova, Cahul, Cantemir, Comrat, Basarabeasca, Cimișlia, Ștefan Vodă, Căușeni, Taraclia and the municipality of Cahul.
The program is part of the national forest expansion initiative, which involves the planting of 145,000 hectares of forests over the next ten years. In the first two years after the launch of the program, over 300 million lei was allocated to the forestry sector, allowing the purchase of modern equipment, including tractors, rotavators and mulchers, thus facilitating the afforestation of the first 11,000 hectares.
The authorities urge the population to actively participate and contribute to the reconstruction of a sustainable environment. Those who want to participate in the planting activities can do so starting November 16, choosing the land near the region where they live. More information and details on how to register for participation can be found on the official website of “Moldsilva” Agency, in the section “Participate in planting, autumn 2024”.
