A number of parties seek resignation of Border Police and Interior Ministry chiefs

The Party “Coalition for Unity and Wellbeing” (CUB) demands that the heads of the Border Police and the Ministry of the Interior should resign owing to their “non-professionalism and failures”. The professional training of the employees of the responsible institutions should be adjusted given the new security threats and the dramatic case at the Chisinau International Airport, which resulted in the deaths of two Moldovans, should be thoroughly investigated. The people who have to deal with such serious challenges should be appropriately equipped, CUB president Igor Munteanu stated in a news conference, being quoted by IPN.

According to Igor Munteanu, this exceptional situation showed that the Republic of Moldova will be unable to cope without a strategic partnership with Romania and the United States as this is the path that needs to be followed to defend the Moldova citizens. “In such conditions, when one attack ends with two deaths and the collapse of the whole security system, we wonder what would happen if an organized group does the same and tries to capture the airport. To what extent, the capacities of the police, the SIS, he Ministry of the Interior, the Border Police and other services can ensure that the citizens feel safe. Even if we have a state of emergency, the Commission for Exceptional Situations now deals only with the dodging of the public procurement system and no way fulfills its main duty – to build resilience, to create capacities of defense from attacks. This is not only sad, but also dramatic,” said the CUB president.

The European Social Democrat Party also demands that the head of the Border Police Rosian Vasiloi should resign. The party said the armed attack at the Chisinau International Airport points to serious gaps in the national security system and this tragic incident cannot pass without consequences. Harsh and categorical measures should be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future. The Border Police chief Rosian Vasiloi is to blame for this tragic case and should assume the consequences and resign. “As he cannot secure the life and safety of his inferiors, he no longer has the moral right to represent and manage them. Moreover, the given measure is also necessary in order to be sure that this case is investigated with maximum seriousness and impartiality, while the persons who showed negligence should be punished in accordance with the law,” said the party.

It noted that the Border Police in particular faces a serious shortage of staff and this also implies enormous security risks for civilians and for the employees from the system. It happens also because the specialists leave the system due to the bad conditions in which they have to work.

On his Facebook page, the executive secretary of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon wrote that this incident showed once again that the current government is unable to ensure the security of the population and the strategic facilities. It is an additional proof of the full incompetence of the country’s administration. It is evident that the heads of the bodies responsible for the population’s security cannot fulfill their duties and should be immediately dismissed.

After the armed attack at the airport, the head of the General Police Inspectorate Viorel Cernăuțeanu said that there are no dangers to the security of the Moldovans and no reasons for panic.

The two victims of the armed attack are 31-year-old border police officer Sergei Muntean, who served as deputy chief agent and had worked for the Border Police since 2011, and aviation security officer Igor Ciofu aged 40. No details were made public about the injured passenger. The attacker was captured, being wounded during the airport siege and is now under medical care.
