Denmark takes over the presidency of the EU Council

Today, Copenhagen takes over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. Its mandate will last half a year, until December 31st of this year, reports IPN.

“It is clearly defined that security is a priority,” mentioned the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, in an interview for Politiken. He stated that “once the NATO objective is set, most of the work depends on EU policy”.

Denmark wishes for the EU plan presented in March to enhance the defense capabilities of the member states of the community bloc to advance, through simplified procedures and loans made available to countries for financing investments in the European defense industry, according to foreign press.

At the same time, the Danish presidency prioritizes the fight against illegal immigration, ensuring “new and innovative solutions”. Copenhagen, during its mandate, intends to take measures on two fronts: the outsourcing of asylum applications and the restriction of the scope of the European Court of Human Rights’ decisions.

Denmark has taken over the presidency of the EU Council from Poland, and Cyprus will succeed it after January 1, 2026.
