The European Parliament decided to extend by one year the trade liberalization measures between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova. MEP Siegfried Mureșan announced this on his Facebook page, IPN reports.
“With this vote, we suspend for another year all remaining duties on imports from the Republic of Moldova into the European Union,” said Siegfried Mureșan.
According to the MEP, the European Parliament’s vote comes just weeks after the publication of the legislative proposal by the European Commission. “We have thus ensured that the measures enter into force on time, before the current liberalization decision expires on July 24, 2024,” noted Siegfried Mureșan.
He argued that the first decision to liberalize trade with Moldova was taken two years ago with the objective of accelerating the country’s European integration and reducing the effects that Russia’s war against Ukraine has on Moldovan producers and exporters. “We see that the Republic of Moldova is integrating more and more into the European Union and we are getting ready to start the accession negotiations. That’s why we want the economic ties with Moldova to grow as much as possible, as quickly as possible and we want the entrepreneurs in the Republic of Moldova to benefit as much as possible from the rapprochement with the European Union,” said the MEP.
Siegfried Mureșan also said that many products from Moldova, especially the fruit and vegetables, are appreciated on markets throughout the European Union and the decision to renew the trade liberalization measures, which allow the Republic of Moldova to export these products to the entire European market, is beneficial to both Moldova and the European market.
