Government approves four candidates for ambassador

The Government approved four candidates for the posts of Ambassador to the U.S., Belgium, Greece and Austria. These are Viorel Ursu, Viorel Cibotaru, Andrei Popov and Mihaela Mocanu, IPN reports.

The Cabinet decided to recall Moldova’s current Ambassador to the U.S Eugen Caras. He will be replaced by Viorel Ursu who since January 2014, has headed the Europe and Eurasia Program Department and also serves as regional director at the Open Society Foundations in London. He worked as a consultant and programs coordinator at Soros Foundation Moldova and for 11 years served as a senior fellow at the Open Society European Policy Institute in Brussels.

Viorel Cibotaru was accepted for the post of Moldova’s Ambassador to Belgium. He is the executive director of the European Institute for Political Studies of Moldova. He has experience in the academic and public sectors. He worked as a lecturer at the Department of Journalism, as programs director at the Institute for Public Policy and as director of the NATO Information and Documentation Center. In 2015, he served as minister of defense. In 2016-2018, he headed the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova.

Andrei Popov will serve in Greece. In 2013-2016, he served as Moldova’s Ambassador to Austria and, simultaneously, to Slovakia and as Moldova’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE and the United Nations Office at Vienna, etc.

Mihaela Mocanu was accepted for Ambassador to Austria. Since October 2019, she has held the post of head of the OSCE and International Security Unit of the Multilateral Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

In the same meeting, the Government decided that Moldova’s Ambassador to Ukraine Valeriu Chiveri will also serve as Ambassador to Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, based in Kyiv, while Moldova’s Ambassador to Russia Lilian Darii will also serve as Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, based in Moscow.

The draft decrees are to be examined and signed by the President of the Republic of Moldova.
