The Metropolitan Church of Bessarabia celebrates the 165th anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities by a special program. On January 24, at midday, a Te Deum service will be held at the Metropolitan Chapel “Saint John the Theologian” in Chisinau. This will be followed by a speech by Metropolitan Bishop of Bessarabia, His Holiness Petru and speeches by cultural and intellectual personalities, IPN reports.
At diocesan level, Te Deum services will be held in all parish churches, hermitages and monasteries of the Archdiocese of Chisinau, on the same day, starting at noontime. Bells will be rung for one minute at the end of each service.
The Metropolitan Church of Bessarabia noted that the anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities and the commemoration of those who made this Union mark not only a historical moment, but also emphasize national unity and dignity. This solemn day is an occasion to reflect on the glorious past and an exhortation to maintain the unity and values that define us as a nation.
On January 24, 1859, the national ideal was crowned by the election of Ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza of Moldavia also as Ruler of Wallachia in Bucharest.
