Poland extends border control measures with Germany and Lithuania.

Poland extends border control measures with Germany and Lithuania until October 4th. The announcement was made on Sunday by Polish Minister of Interior Marcin Kierwiński. The reason stated was related to ongoing concerns about illegal migration, as reported by mediafax.ro, cited by IPN.

The increase in security measures has made the Belarus – Russia route largely impracticable, so the wave of migration is heading towards other EU member states, especially Latvia and Lithuania.

“If we reduce our borders by 98%, it means that illegal migration services from Russia and Belarus will shift towards other sections. Today, the main task, not only for us, but also for our partners in the European Union, is to close the route to Lithuania and Latvia,” stated Marcin Kierwiński, the Minister of Interior of Poland.

The measure was taken on July 7 and was supposed to end on August 5.
