A young man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for scams carried out through the “relative involved in an accident” scheme. He, along with yet unidentified accomplices, deceived several people, illegally obtaining over a million lei. The victims were contacted by phone and tricked into paying for the “cover-up” of fictitious road accidents, reports IPN.
The General Prosecutor’s Office clarifies that in January 2025, the young man contacted the first victim at her home in Chisinau, claiming that his daughter was responsible for an accident that had injured a person. To “cover up” the case and pay for medical services, they obtained from her, in two installments, the sum of 100 thousand lei.
He, along with other members of the criminal group, using the same criminal scheme, obtained financial resources from five other people, amounting to over one million lei in total.
According to the prosecutors, the 19-year-old young man has admitted his guilt, the case being examined in a simplified procedure. He is to serve his sentence in a semi-closed type prison.
The sentence is not final and can be challenged at the Central Court of Appeal.
