The mass media nongovernmental organizations in May stage the Press Freedom Days. On May 4, the Association of Independent Press (API) launches a nationwide contest for students entitled “Good governance for everyone. Become involved!”, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the API.
On May 5, there will be presented the study of the authorities’ reaction to the journalistic investigations on issues of integrity and corruption that was conducted by the API in partnership with Transparency International Moldova, and a contest of podcasts centering on disinformation, including about COVID-19 and vaccination, intended for radio stations.
A special meeting of the National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum centering on World Press Freedom Day will be held on May 11, 2021. As part of the project “Journalism in Defense and Security”, on May 13 there will be held the press club “National security amid escalation of regional conflicts” that will involve local and foreign experts. On May 14, the API invites journalists to the webinar “Freedom of expression vs. defense of honor, dignity and professional reputation”.
In the course of May, the API will continue to support the activity of the working group for finalizing the strategy and action plan for implementing the national concept for the development of the mass media and will launch the campaign #CeremReformeRealeÎnMedia! In the second half of the month, there will be presented the results of the annual API contests for 2020 and will be handed over the “Tudor Iashchenko Award” that was instituted in memory of the director of the independent newspaper “Cuvântul” (“Word”) – famous investigation journalist and first chairman of the API Tudor Yashchenko.
At the end of May, the API will present a report on the attacks against media outlets in Armenia, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova in 2020.
The API activities related to the Press Freedom Days 2021 are carried out in the framework of projects financed by the EU and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, Soros Foundation Moldova, Deutsche Welle Akademie (Germany), the UK Foundation “Justice for Journalists.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. Since then, May 3, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.
