The Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova and the Ambassadors of the EU Member States have joined efforts in a VIDEO MESSAGE encouraging the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and follow the healthcare measures in the context of the pandemic. Given the high number of COVID-19 cases in the country, a common effort is essential to improve vaccination rates, which could save lives and ease the burden on the health system.
“We, as Team Europe, will continue our support provided to the citizens of this country and its health system in the fight against the COVID-19. The pandemic is not over: we must remain vigilant and I call on everyone to get vaccinated. Together we can beat the pandemic: we remain #StrongerTogether! Rămânem împreună mai puternici!”, Jānis MAŽEIKS, EU Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova.
The message of the EU Ambassador was supported by other 16 Ambassadors residents in Chisinau and the Head of European Investment Bank – in the spirit of Team Europe. The Ambassadors are encouraging people to continue to be vigilant and respect prevention measures: wear masks, keep social distance and get vaccinated. They also point out that Solidarity is even more important in these difficult times when the country is facing a new wave of increased cases of infections. On this occasion, the representatives of the diplomatic missions reconfirm Team Europe support for the Republic of Moldova throughout the pandemic and continue to stay close to the citizens with concrete support, including for long-term the recovery of the country.
The ‘TEAM EUROPE’ approach represents the joint effort of EU and EU Member States to provide support in the context of Covid-19 pandemic, as a united European response to the major needs of the partner countries Team Europe’s RESPONSE is global and addresses three priorities:
- emergency response;
- support to health, water/sanitation and nutrition systems; and
- support to socio-economic recovery that helps partner countries to ‘build back better’ by focusing on a sustainable, green, and digital recovery.
In the Republic of Moldova, Team Europe has been providing a continuous support to the country and its citizens during Covid pandemic, as well as overcoming its impact on people’s lifes and the economy of the country. The European Union announced the Economic Recovery Plan for the Republic of Moldova valuing 600 million EUR over the next three years to promote investments and to support recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic for the citizens.
The recovery plan is part of Team Europe approach and will focus on five key pillars: assistance to improve public finance management and economic governance, support to SMEs to help companies export to the EU and become more competitive with increased digital and green capacities, investments in road and rail connectivity, as well as energy efficiency for reduction of emissions and jobs creation. The plan will also boost education and employability and support structural reforms in the justice sector and fight against corruption.
The Republic of Moldova was the first European country to benefit from the COVAX Facility and the EU Civil Protection mechanism. Overall, the EU has supported the delivery of more than ONE MILLION doses of vaccines to the Republic of Moldova through COVAX or via donations by the EU Member States under the vaccine-sharing mechanism. European Union Member States have also provided PPE, lifesaving critical medical equipment, and other supplies bilaterally or through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The total value of the support provided by EU Member State countries is over €20 million.
