Thirty-four ventilators for patients with COVID-19 in a serious state, who need mechanical ventilation, and 41 monitors were supplied to Moldova owing to the financial and technical support of the European Union and the World Health Organization as part of the initiative “European Union Solidarity for Health” to mitigate to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in EaP countries, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the Ministry of Health.

Alexandru Holostenco, secretary of state at the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, said that thanks to the support of the partners, the medical system copes with the current epidemiological situation and the number of infected patients. “We thank the European Union and the World Health Organization for solidarity and involvement,” he stated.

Magdalena Mueller-Uri, Head of the Operations Department of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldov, stated that during these crisis times, the EU supports the Republic of Moldova and the delivered equipment is a relevant proof of this support. “Furthermore, a new initiative with the total budget of €5.1 million financed by the European Union and co-financed and implemented by the WHO will be launched soon to help the Republic of Moldova cope with the current threats to public health,” stated Magdalena Mueller-Uri.

Iuliana Garam, of the WHO Country Office, approved of the fact that the WHO and the EU continue to be near frontline healthcare workers in the fight against COVID-19. “The delivered ventilators that are indicated for persons with acute or chronic respiratory failure are vital in saving the lives of patients with COVID-19,” stated Iuliana Garam.

The value of the medical equipment is of about €1 million. This is one of the largest donations from the EU and the WHO so far. The equipment will be distributed by the Ministry of Health according to the needs of hospitals. The consumables for the medical equipment donated earlier – 356 oxygen concentrators and 210 pulse oximeters – were also supplied to Chisinau.
